The park was officially opened by Queen Máxima in the summer of 2013, and continues to be developed every year. Park for 100.000 new residents. As construction on a wholly new suburb of Utrecht began, the community needed a unifying, public space that would not only bring the 100,000 new residents together but also create a shared identity.

Established in 1990, the 300-hectare recreation area in 2011 was named after Máxima Zorreguiety, wife of the current reigning King of Holland, Willem-Alexander. The park is crossed by an 8-kilometer asphalt road closed to cars, which is ideal for cycling, roller-skating, walking and jogging.
