The wood frog ( Lithobates sylvaticus) may be reddish, tan or dark brown but always has a dark mask under and behind the eyes. Some individuals have a light line down the middle of the back. This species has a dark blotch on the chest near each front leg. The belly is white and may have some dark mottling.

One of the most common frogs in Ontario is the Wood Frog, or Lithobates sylvaticus. The dark mask-like pattern around the eyes of these tiny terrestrial frogs is what gives them their characteristic appearance; it is reminiscent of a raccoon's face. Wood frogs are common in the province's woodlands, ponds, and mixed forests.

The bullfrog ( Lithobates catesbeianus) is the largest frog in North America. The tadpoles of this species are noticeably larger than those of other species. In Ontario, the pickerel frog is the frog species most similar in appearance to the northern leopard frog. The pickerel frog's spots are angular and usually arranged into two rows down the back, whereas the leopard frog's spots are rounded or oval and are in a more random pattern.

The gray treefrog is a true "tree frog": it can be found at the top of even the tallest trees. These frogs are rarely seen outside the breeding season. The green frog ( Lithobates clamitans) is a large frog with large, distinct tympani (eardrums) and two prominent dorsolateral folds (folds of skin that run partly down the back). It may be green, bronze, brown or even blue, or a combination of colours, but typically is green on the upper lip.
